Wedding Planning

What’s the Best Month to Get Married?

Whether you’re recently engaged or not, there’s never a bad time to start dreaming about your perfect wedding. One of the first steps to planning a wedding is setting a date.

Which is why the question on many brides’ lips is “what’s the best month to get married?”

Choosing the right month to have your wedding can make all the difference in your big day, and there are a lot of things to consider—the biggest thing being the weather. We’re not talking about snow storm in February forcing you to postpone (that’s what wedding insurance is for after all). We mean making sure you and your guests will be comfortable no matter the weather outside.

When choosing your wedding date, you also need to keep in mind your guests’ work and school calendars, local events planned, vendor availability, and more. No matter what season you choose, and where your wedding will be, there are pros and cons to each month.

Read on for our tips to having your wedding in any season and decide for yourself what’s the best month to get married.

When Is Wedding Season?

Generally speaking, wedding season is when the majority of weddings take place, and that tends be from spring to early fall. Spring and fall offer the most mild weather, while most couples would prefer to deal with the heat of a summer wedding over the possibility of a snow storm in winter. Wedding season can depend on your location. After all, the winter here in San Antonio is much different than in Michigan.

The most popular wedding months on the calendar tend to be June, October, and September. May and August aren’t too far behind.

Regional events and cultural preferences may sway your feelings when choosing your wedding date, and there’s nothing wrong with an off-season wedding! Ultimately, the best month to get married depends on you and your wedding plans.

Spring Weddings: March, April, & May

As the cold winter fades away and vibrant flowers begin to bloom, spring emerges as an idyllic season to tie the knot, and it’s always at the top of the latest wedding trends. The months of March, April, and May typically boast comfortable temperatures, making outdoor ceremonies and receptions a delightful option.

Plus, in the springtime, you can take your pick of having a casual or black tie affair, since the weather can work with both.

Spring weddings offer a variety of color palettes, from soft pastels to bright and bold hues, and lots of beautiful in-season flowers and gorgeous landscapes. Spring is also the season of rebirth and new beginnings, which ties in wonderfully with a wedding.

May is a popular wedding month, so the competition is fierce, but March and April are great options as well. With a spring wedding, you’ll have to contend with some rainy days, but that’s not a problem when you choose a wedding venue with equally stunning indoor and outdoor ceremony options.

However, a spring wedding also coincides with allergy season, so be sure to have plenty of antihistamines on hand!

Finally, spring is a peak wedding season meaning booking vendors and venues will be tough and the average cost of a wedding is a bit higher. If your heart is set on a spring wedding, plan on a long engagement if you want to get your first choice date, venue, and more.

Summer Weddings: June, July, & August

Summer weddings are immensely popular because the idea of vacation is at the forefront of everyone’s minds already.

June, July, and August are the summer months, and June is by far the most popular wedding month of the three, if not in the whole year. Summer weddings get a bad rap because of the heat—especially here in Texas—but just like with spring showers, weather is easy to contend with when you choose the right venue.

With a summer wedding, you have more daylight to get all your photos in and you can go with a casual dress code without turning down any of the glamour. The grass and trees are all perfectly green, and you can have your pick of flowers and catering options.

August weddings are often written off, but that means you can swoop in and get all your top choice vendors and venue, maybe even at a discounted rate. June and July are also more popular for not only weddings but also family travel, graduations, summer camp, and more, so August might be more open for your guest list.

Yes, summer is hot, hot, hot, but there are plenty of ways around that. If you still want an outdoor ceremony, just keep it short and provide fans to keep your guests comfortable. It’s also the perfect excuse to add ice cream and other frozen treats to your dessert menu!

Fall Weddings: September, October, & November

Crisp air, stunning foliage, and a cozy ambiance make fall a favorite season for weddings.

September, October, and November offer a perfect blend of mild weather and mesmerizing scenery, and it’s the most mild and predictable weather of the whole year. The changing leaves provide a gorgeous backdrop for your wedding photos, while the cooler temperatures allow for comfortable outdoor ceremonies and receptions.

And if you’re a pumpkin spice and apple cider lover, a fall wedding is the perfect time to theme your wedding around the season. Fall is also the perfect season if you want to use earth tones in your color palette.

Finally, the gorgeous natural scenery means you can cut down on your decorating spend and just use your surroundings.

Like June, October is one of the most popular wedding months of the year, so if you’re hoping for an October wedding date, start planning early.

With a September wedding, you’ll need to plan your date around school start and other end-of-summer activities, but later in the month is usually wide open. The same goes for November before Thanksgiving.

However, in the fall months, people have just used their summer vacation days and are saving the rest for the holidays, meaning they’ll be less inclined to travel. It’s also football season, so if you don’t check the schedule when choosing your wedding date, you might have more “no” RSVPs than originally intended. Fall overall is still an in-demand wedding season so you’ll need to plan to go over your budget if you’re committed to a fall wedding date.

Winter Weddings: December, January, & February

Overall, winter in Texas is beautiful and mild, and that’s great news if you’re on a budget and want your pick of venues and vendors!

If you love the snow and Christmas time, a December wedding is ideal. An all-white palette evokes the feeling of freshly fallen snow and you can accent your space with firepits and candles. What could be more romantic than that?

Plus, you can add a hot chocolate bar to your dessert menu—among many more fun wintery food ideas. December is the most popular winter wedding month, so it can be challenging. You’ll be contending with guests’ holiday plans after all, and the holidays are the most expensive weeks for flights and hotels no matter the occasion.

If you don’t have a lot of travelers or are planning on a smaller wedding, December is the perfect time for you to wed!

January and February meanwhile offer all the same cozy feelings—minus Christmas—with fewer obstacles.

While it doesn’t snow often in Texas, snowstorms in other parts of the country can throw a major wrench in your guests’ travel plans, so if you’re inviting lots of out-of-towners, winter may not be the season for you.

How To Choose the Best Month to Get Married

Ultimately, when it comes to choosing the best month to get married, your personal preferences make all the difference.

If you’ve got a strict budget, check out the less popular months like January, February, July, and August. Remember that not only will venues be a little less expensive in the offseason, but so will vendors, so you can save some money on catering, wedding planner costs, flowers, and more.

But if you’ve got a large guestlist and want as many attendees as possible, aim for May, June, and October so you can fit into their schedules.

If you’re planning a fun wedding theme, choose the month that best correlates, like October for a Halloween wedding or September for the perfect end-of-summer bash.

If you’re planning a wedding in under a year, or less than six months even, you’ll probably need to consider having a weekday wedding to ensure you get one of the peak months—or you can use it as an opportunity to choose one of the less popular wedding months! Nothing wrong with a Friday wedding in February in our books!

Each month offers its own set of advantages and challenges. In the end, choosing the best wedding month depends greatly on your personal wedding dreams and where you’re planning to get married.
