Mexican Wedding Traditions We Love to See

One of the things we love most about hosting weddings is the diverse cultural heritages of our brides and grooms! We love when couples bring their cultures into their wedding day at Kendall Point, and from the colors to the food to the customs, Mexican wedding traditions are some of our favorites.

Many of these customs are deeply rooted in history, but our couples love to personalize them when it comes to the big day.

So, let’s explore some of our favorite Mexican wedding traditions and why they are the perfect addition to your San Antonio wedding experience.

Mexican Wedding Foods

One of the things guests remember most about a wedding is the food. And San Antonio has some of the best Mexican cuisine in the country, so there’s nothing we love more than seeing tacos, guacamole, ceviche, and more on the wedding menu.

When it comes to Mexican wedding food, sweet and savory go together for every course.

A build-your-own taco bar is something your guests will love, and it is especially fitting for a spring or summer wedding in Texas. Meanwhile, ceviche makes an excellent hors d’oeuvre during cocktail hour. And speaking of cocktail hour, check out this chips and salsa bar one of our couples had!

Don’t forget about the bar either!

If you’re looking to embrace your Mexican heritage, have a tequila and Mezcal bar and choose margaritas for your specialty cocktails. Sangria is also an excellent option, and for non-alcoholic choices, agua fresca (fruit-based, sweetened water) makes an excellent summer drink while Mexican hot chocolate is perfect for a winter wedding.

Finally, dessert!

Churros and tres leches cake also make a great addition to the wedding cake, along with traditional Mexican wedding cookies. These cookies are commonly served as wedding favors and are made with almonds and walnuts.

Mexican Wedding Colors

In a word, vibrant!

Bold colors are definitely on the list of 2024 wedding trends, and fortunately, Mexican wedding colors are already all about the bold and beautiful.

Many people instantly think of Día de los Muertos when thinking of Mexican cultural traditions, and while that doesn’t have to be your wedding theme, you’ll most definitely love the colors.

Hues of red, pink, yellow, blue, and green blend together beautifully to make an ornate color palette you can use for your table settings, wedding flowers, signage, and more.

Red and pink symbolize love and passion, so you’ll often see them used in the wedding décor and even accenting the bride’s dress.

And just because these colors are bright and bold doesn’t mean they aren’t appropriate for a wedding any month of the year.

Mexican Wedding Entertainment

Let’s talk party. With all those bold, vibrant colors after all, you can imagine the reception will be just as lively.

Many couples love to hire a mariachi band to perform during the ceremony and the reception, and there’s no better way to get people on the dance floor.

When it comes to getting from the ceremony to the reception (even if they’re in the same place), let’s talk about La Callejoneada—the wedding parade. Some couples will take to the streets to loudly celebrate their nuptials with their guests and the community, but you can also incorporate it into your reception as the perfect send-off.

Mexican folk dancers also add more flair to your reception and can help guests follow along with traditional dances.

If you want more than music as your wedding entertainment, consider some traditional Mexican games like Lotería (similar to bingo) or a piñata.

You can even use a piñata as your wedding guestbook. Have guests write sweet messages to you, and you can break open the piñata after your honeymoon or on your first anniversary.

Mexican Wedding Attire

Many Mexican brides will choose a dress with lots of lace and intricacy, which adds to the romance of their special day. Many will accent their dress with red or pink accessories to add a pop of color, or they’ll opt for a red or pink dress entirely.

When it comes to the men, we love to see a groom donning the traditional charro suit, complete with sombrero. Just as elegant is a classic suit with a bright pocket square or boutonniere to match the wedding’s décor.

As for the guests, bright colors and floral accents are welcome as you celebrate the happy couple. And don’t forget comfortable shoes since there will be plenty of dancing.
