Wedding Planning, Wedding Tips

Wedding Planning Do’s and Don’ts

Whether you’re aiming for a short engagement or a long one, planning your ideal wedding day is likely to be a whirlwind. But here at Kendall Point, we’ve put a lot of thought into making your big day as easy and enjoyable as possible!

Every couple can benefit from some expert wedding tips, so today, we’re sharing our top 10 wedding planning do’s and don’ts to make the wedding planning process seamless and stress-free.

1. DO Have a Budget

Having a wedding budget isn’t just for couples trying to save money. Budgets can also help you narrow down your options and identify your top priorities, making wedding decisions much easier.

However, don’t just set a budget for the entire wedding. Decide how much you’re comfortable spending on each category—from the venue to the dress—so you’ll have an answer when vendors ask, “How much is your budget?”.

2. DO Hire a Wedding Planner

Your bridesmaids are there for you through thick and thin, but no member of your wedding party is an adequate replacement for a professional wedding planner.

Not only can they help make your dream wedding a reality, they offer invaluable tips and recommendations for local vendors.

If a full wedding planner isn’t in your budget, consider hiring a coordinator to make sure the day goes according to your wedding day timeline.

3. DON’T Hire Amateur Vendors

There are plenty of ways to save money on your wedding, but hiring amateur vendors should never be one of them.

Each one of your vendors has a huge impact on your wedding day. Have you considered what would happen if you ended up with an inedible wedding cake, a DJ who shows up drunk with missing equipment, or a photographer who forgets their back up gear?

Saving money should never come at the expense of professionalism!

Instead, ask your venue team for recommendations. Because they have the inside scoop on all the local vendors, they’ll be able to recommend pros who make your wedding day a success.

4. DON’T Use the Word “Cheap”

This one may be a bit controversial, but we always advise our couples not to use the word “cheap” when talking to wedding vendors, regardless of your budget.

This is because many people have different ideas of what “cheap” means. You might think that a $400 wedding dress is cheap, whereas another bride might call the same gown “pricey.”

Instead, talk about “maximizing your budget” or—better yet—simply giving a budget amount. That way, your vendors will know exactly how to help you.

5. DO Choose Your Wedding Date Carefully

Ceremony start time, guest dress code, which flowers are in-season…all of these details are impacted by your wedding date. But it isn’t just sunset time you need to be concerned about.

Depending on where you’re getting married, you may have to contend with peak wedding season, which will be busier—and therefore pricier—than events in the off-season.

When you’re deciding on the best month to get married, make sure you consider all the details.

6. DO Consider a Weekday Wedding

We’re just gonna say it: Friday weddings are totally underrated!

In addition to being more affordable, weekday weddings allow you and your entire guest list to get the most out of the weekend. If you’re having a destination wedding in Texas Hill Country, a Friday night ceremony and reception will leave your friends and family members with plenty of time to enjoy everything that San Antonio has to offer.

7. DO Put the Correct Time On Your Invitation

We’ve heard it too from  social media that you should put an earlier time on your wedding invitations so that none of your guests are late. From our experience, however, it simply makes it look like you’re the one who’s late. Why punish the guests who showed up on time, to wait for those who are always late? Trust your guests will arrive at the time of the invitation.

8. DO Embrace Your Unique Style

Don’t get us wrong: we LOVE to see the latest wedding trends, but if these trends don’t speak to you or reflect your personality, don’t feel like you have to follow them. (The same goes for wedding traditions, by the way.)

Trust us when we say that unique, alternative wedding themes are just as fun (if not more)!

9. DON’T Forget to Have Fun

When planning a wedding, it’s so easy to get lost in the details. Resist the urge to overcomplicate things and instead focus on why the two of you are walking down the aisle: your love for each other.

Still, for some couples, there will be unavoidable stressors that crop up between engagement and “I do.” At the very least, use your wedding as a chance to relax and enjoy all your hard work!
