What to Wear to a Wedding: A Guest’s Guide

Weddings are a joyous occasion that brings people together to celebrate love and commitment. As a guest, one of the most important decisions is what to wear. The right outfit not only shows respect for the event and the couple but also ensures that you feel confident and comfortable throughout the day.

Whether you’re attending a black tie affair or a summer celebration, we have the guide for you. Read on for some tips on what guests wear to weddings and how what you choose is vital to the day.

What to Wear to a Wedding

No matter the wedding dress code you’re dealing with, you’ll want your wedding guest outfit to be comfortable. Weddings typically last between 5 and 6 hours and there’s lots of dancing, eating, walking, and talking involved so you don’t want to be in anything you’ll want to take off after an hour.

Let's Plan Your Dream Wedding

Layers are also important to consider when it comes to your wedding outfit because you might be cooler during the ceremony than you are during the reception or there might be a drastic change in temperate between an outdoor ceremony and indoor reception.

No matter what outfit you choose, be sure it follows the dress code you’re given by the couple. They chose that dress code for a specific reason to match with the theme and décor of their big day, and it’s inappropriate not to respect that. As a guest, ask the couple questions about what to wear if you’re unsure, and as the couple, be sure to give your guess proper guidelines on your wedding website and invitations.

What to Wear to a Fall Wedding

Fall is a very popular time to get married because of the rich colors and cozy ambiance. Dressing for a fall wedding involves choosing outfits that are appropriate for the cooler weather.

A wedding guest can wear heavier fabrics that provide warmth and speak to the overall coziness of the season.

Women: If it’s a semi-formal wedding women can wear heavier long dresses with quarter or full sleeves. If you’re going for a sleeveless look make sure to bring a shawl.

Men: If the wedding is black tie optional, don’t make yourself uncomfortable on purpose. Choose a suit in charcoal, navy, or brown to bring out the colors of the season.

What to Wear to a Winter Wedding

Winter weddings are enchanting and can have a cozy and festive atmosphere (Christmas wedding anyone?). However, dressing for a winter wedding can be challenging depending on where you live. At Kendall Point we don’t have harsh winters like up north but it can still get a bit chilly!

For a winter wedding opt for fabrics that provide some warmth without sacrificing elegance. Velvet, wool, and heavier silks are wonderful choices. These materials not only keep you warm but also add a bit of luxury to your outfit.

Darker colors such as burgundy, greens, navy, and black are perfect colors for a winter wedding.

Women: Depending on the time of day, women can opt for a long gown with a shrug if it gets chilly.

Men: Men can wear a suit with a heavy overcoat that can be removed if it gets hot in doors.

What to Wear to a Summer Wedding

Summer weddings are vibrant and full of life! They are often held outdoors in gardens, beaches, or picturesque venues like Kendall Point. Dressing for a summer wedding involves balancing comfort, style, and class. You’ll need to consider the warmer weather and occasional casual atmosphere.

Opt for lighter, breathable, and bright fabrics. Cotton, linen, and chiffon typically stay cool.

Celebrate in very cheerful and bright colors. Pastels, floral prints, and light neutral work well when deflecting the sun.

Women: Depending on the wedding dress code, women can opt for a maxi dress, midi dress, or cocktail dress in a lighter color. If it’s a beach wedding don’t be afraid to wear flip flops!

Men: Men should opt for a lighter color suit or dress shirt. If it’s a more casual wedding then a dress shirt and blazer is perfectly acceptable.

What To Wear to a Spring Wedding

Spring weddings are fresh and romantic and of course have the best selection when it comes to flowers! The weather is mild and there’s not too much to think about when it comes to dressing for a spring wedding.

Spring is a wonderful time to wear soft, flowing fabrics like chiffon, organza, or lace. Pastel colors like blush pink, lavenders, light greens, and baby blue are classic colors for this time of year. Floral prints are also popular in spring and can speak to the flowers of the season.

Women: Light and airy knee-length dresses that are flowing are perfect for a spring wedding.

Men: Spring wedding attire for men should be lighter material suits with a floral tie for some added flair.

What to Wear to a Black Tie Wedding

Black-tie weddings are the most formal type of celebration which are often held in the evening. As a wedding guest your attire should respect the event’s elegance and formality.
This type of wedding can happen during any season so it’s important to take the tips from above and apply them to the more elegant parameters of the event itself.

Women: As always, women should avoid wearing white but besides that, women have a bit more freedom in regards to their choice. Aim for a floor length gown or a fancy cocktail dress. Avoid casual or very short dresses as they don’t fit the ambiance of black-tie.

Men: For men a black-tie event usually means wearing a tuxedo. This includes black or blue jacket with matching pants, a white shirt, a black tie bow, black patent leather shoes, and a waistcoat.

Being Invited to a Wedding Is an Honor

When you’re invited to a wedding, consider it an honor and dress appropriately. It shows your love and respect for the couple’s big day. By following the guidelines for winter, summer, spring, fall, and black-tie, you’ll be well-prepared to not only look your best but feel your best too!
