Whether your vibe is colorful or minimal, modern or romantic, flowers are an important part of any wedding day. It could even be argued that your wedding flowers will have the biggest impact when it comes to reflecting your décor, theme, and color palette.
Suffice to say, this is not a decision to be made lightly!
Yet choosing your wedding flowers is also a big job. (After all, you’re doing far more than picking your bouquet and a couple of centerpieces.)
As one of the Texas Hill Country’s top wedding venues, Kendall Point has our finger on the pulse of the wedding industry. In this guide, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about wedding flowers, from seasonal blooms to how to choose a florist.
When most couples think of “wedding flowers,” they tend to picture the bridal bouquet. However, you’ll need a lot more than something to hold as you walk down the aisle.
Here are some of the types of flowers you’ll need to think about during wedding planning.
The wedding bouquet—also known as the bridal bouquet—will feature heavily during your special day (and in photographs hereafter). They are usually larger than other bouquets and may even be a different style or color.
Toss bouquets are optional, but if you want to do a bouquet toss at your reception, you’ll want something other than your official bouquet to throw. Toss bouquets are usually similar in color to your bridal bouquet, but much smaller, as this makes them easier to throw (and catch)!
Bridesmaid bouquets are typically smaller than the bridal bouquet, but should coordinate with it. Some brides may design a different style bouquet for their maid or matron of honor.
Don’t forget about the men! Grooms and groomsmen will need a boutonniere, although the groom’s will generally be a different color or type of flower.
Whether you have a flower girl or a flower grandma, they’ll need something to toss on the aisle at the ceremony. While many couples are going with more unconventional options (such as confetti or pom poms), flower petals are still the most popular choice.
At the very least, you should think about what centerpieces you want for your reception tables (even if it’s as simple as a bud vase and a couple of candles). However, there are plenty of other spaces at your wedding venue that look amazing with a little floral decoration.
Consider adding some floral arrangements to your wedding signage, bar, sweetheart table, ceremony aisle, or even your dessert table. Here at Kendall Point, you will also have a vine-covered grand staircase ready for you to embellish!
Whether you have your heart set on calla lilies or you simply want to match your wedding’s color palette, you may already have some idea of the type of flowers you want for your big day. However, you also need to consider what’s in season.
Florists are often limited by the time of year in regards to what they can source for you, so shopping for seasonal blooms is a good way to get what you want—and save some money too.
The good news? Roses are popular year-round and come in every shade of the rainbow, so there’s no worries about finding a flower color to match your color scheme!
Popular options for spring flowers are tulips, ranunculus, and peonies. However, living in Texas, you also have a variety of beautiful native flowers to choose from, such as bluebonnets!
When it comes to flowers, you can’t go wrong with a summer wedding! Carnations, Gerbera daisies, zinnia, and hydrangeas are in full bloom during the hot summer months.
The fall months remain the most popular for wedding dates, and fortunately, there are plenty of flowers to choose from. Asters, chrysanthemums, dahlias, and sunflowers make for colorful and elegant bouquets.
Who says there’s nothing blooming in winter? Anemones, amaryllis, orchid, and sweet pea are all timeless and stunning options for any wedding flower arrangement.
According to a survey by The Knot, couples are spending an average of $2,800 on their wedding flowers, which is about 10% of the average total wedding budget. It’s important to note that this number comes from voluntary survey responses from couples and wedding florists. Many wedding florists have a minimum spend amount, so it’s important to research florists early in the wedding planning process and ask about any stipulations.
Keep in mind, however, that there are many different factors that go into this cost. How many floral arrangements you need (nine bridesmaids bouquets will cost a lot less than 19!), what type of flowers you want, and the experience of the florist will play a huge role in your final price.
This is no time to call 1-800-Flowers! This is your wedding day and it deserves to be treated like the special event it truly is.
It’s also important that you search for a floral designer who specializes in weddings and not just a run-of-the-mill florist. Florists might be good at arranging an apology bouquet or a Mother’s Day arrangement, but a wedding professional will have the connections, experience, and organizational skill to handle a busy wedding weekend.
Here at Kendall Point, we have multiple recommendations for local wedding floral designers who deliver excellent work every time.
Your wedding flowers are one of the biggest contributions to the overall look and feel of your wedding day. But with some help from your florist, your wedding planner, and your wedding venue, you can have the event of your dreams.
Here at Kendall Point, we want every couple to have an amazing wedding experience. We created our Texas Hill Country wedding venue specifically with weddings in mind, making sure to include all the amenities and features to make wedding planning easier.
